Medford communication tower upsets neighborhood

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — The Federal Communications Commission says the city of Medford violated a federal rule by not registering a police communications tower before construction.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports that the city blames the oversight on a misinterpretation of federal rules. The tower is also within a half-mile of the historic Hamilton and Edith Patton House, another FCC violation.

Police in Medford say the tower is a necessary replacement for the existing 60-foot tower, which has difficulty providing communications inside the area’s hospital, mall and the Medford City Hall.

Neighbors say they weren’t given any notice about the new tower, and say the tower should be taken down until the city council can hear public comments on it.

The existing tower has served as the city’s primary 911 communications center since 1988.
