WASHINGTON (AP) — Christopher Tolson came off the bench to score 20 points as Hampton overcame a sluggish second half to post an 83-72 victory over Howard on Thursday night, wrapping up second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Tolson came into the game averaging just 3.2 points per game, but was 7 of 10 from the floor and 4 of 7 from 3-point range to spark the Pirates (21-8, 11-5).
The Bison (6-23, 4-12) trailed by 14 at halftime, but a 20-8 run capped by Alphonso Leary’s layup got Howard to 44-42 with 14:27 remaining.
Hampton answered with a 14-2 run of its own, keyed by 3s from Tolson and Darrion Pellum, to take control of the contest.
Pellum scored 21 points and Kwame Morgan added 17 points for the Pirates, while Anton Dickerson led the Bison with 21 points.
