BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) — With gold and silver prices high, miners plan to plow out a road to a snowbound basin in northeast Oregon that was worked heavily a century ago.
The plowing would open the Cable Cove district two to three months earlier than usual. Usually it’s impassable half the year, except by snowmobile.
The Baker City Herald reports that officials aren’t naming the company that wants to explore Cable Cove. An industry representative says the work could cost millions and employ at least 10 people — and many more if large-scale mining proves feasible.
Officials say plowing permits from local and federal agencies may require turnouts along narrow stretches and a bond.
