“Things are doing fine here,” Don Chandler said at 8:25 a.m. from his home above Netarts Bay on the northern Oregon coast. He is the former longtime sports editor of The Columbian.

“At 5 a.m., the sirens went off and at 5:30 we got a reverse 911 call.

“So I was up taking pictures but we had bigger waves a couple of nights ago when we had 70 mph winds.

“There’s no noticeable change in the surf.

“There might have been a miniscule surge … it lasted for 15 minutes about a half hour ago.

“Right now the tide is going out pretty fast.”

His home is more than 100 feet above the beach.

As for gawkers, he said, “It’s better that people stay away. I haven’t see one person (on the beach).”
