For the 75th time, the flag of Ireland will be raised in front of the Clark County Courthouse to commemorate St. Patrick’s Day and honor the man who for many years was Vancouver’s most loyal Irishman, Denny Lane.

Lane, Vancouver’s first constable, raised the green, white and orange Irish flag at the courthouse every St. Patrick’s Day for 30 years. He died in 1966 at the age of 89, but family and friends have continued his tradition.

On Thursday, the public is invited to take part in “Denny’s Day,” during a celebration at 9 a.m. The flag will be raised during the gathering.

Lane’s family and friends will participate at 12:30 p.m. in the 20th Annual Paddy Day Hough Parade, which takes off from Hough Elementary School. Marchers in Lane’s memory will carry the Irish flag on a pole and be led by a bagpiper.

“We do this to honor my grandfather Denny, who made is home here for scores of years,” Terry Klein said in an e-mail. “He was a loyal son of Ireland and proud adopted son of America.”
