Community notebook: Young, CRST swimmers shine at Oregon Short Course meet

Columbia River Swim Team takes overall team title

Led by two gold medal swims by Andrea Young, the Columbia River Swim Team of Vancouver won the title at the Oregon Swimming Senior Short Course Championships, held March 4-6 at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

Young won gold medals in the the girls 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.65 seconds and in the girls 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.64.

Other gold-medal winners for CRST were Peggy Liang in the girls 100 freestyle (52.82) and Wesley Tatum in the boys 200 backstroke in 1:59.83.

CRST led all teams with 1,045 points for all boys and girls events. Host Mount Hood Swim Club finished second with 863 points and the Maverick Swim Club scored 825. Vancouver Swim Club finished 11th amond the 32 scoring teams with 225.5 points, and the Tornadoes Swim Team was 18th with 117 points. Attached are the results for CRST.

Young, Liang, Julia Sanders and Darya Saimee teamed to win four relay races: the girls 800 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 400 medley.

Jessica Bottleberghe of Vancouver, competing for Portland Aquatic Club, won the girls 1,000-yard freestyle (10:34.10).

Sanders, Liang and Young are scheduled to compete this week at the National Club Swimming Association’s Spring Junior National Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Hoops team takes second place

The Camas Heat, a sixth-grade boys basketball team, took second place at the Oregon State 12-and-under AAU Basketball Championships. The tournament was held March 12-13 at Cottage Grove, Ore.

In pool play, the Camas Heat beat Team Concept Elite (Portland) 57-36, and Eugene’s top AAU club, Game Time, 73-52. In the semifinals, the Heat beat Portland’s Inner City Players, 54-36. It was the first win over the ICP team in four tries over four years for the Heat.

In the championship game, the Heat lost to Team Concept Premier from Portland 71-52. Team Concept Premier is considered the top sixth-grade AAU program in the region. It won the Oregon State title for the third year in a row.

The Camas Heat placed third in this tournament as fifth-graders in 2010.The Oregon AAU district includes Clark County.

Players for the Heat were: Payton Dray, Tanner Fogle, Vinny Gennaro, Austin Lewis, Cooper McNatt, Logan Miller, Bryan Nguyen and Keithen Shepard. The team was coached by Jeremy Fogle and Doug Dray.

Local players on ODP soccer finalists

Marshall Hartley and James Nosack from Vancouver were on Washington Elite Development Program boys soccer team that placed second at the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program National Championships which concluded on March 6 in Phoenix, Ariz.

The team of boys born in 1995 was one of four regional champions competing for the national title. After Washington beat Georgia in the semifinals on penalty kicks, the Virginia team defeated Washington 3-1 to win the title.

Lacrosse season begins

The King’s Way boys lacrosse team won three of four matches at a preseason jamboree held over the weekend in Issaquah.

King’s Way beat Providence Christian 9-3, Blanchet 7-3 and Seattle Prep 9-1. Eastside Catholic beat King’s Way 10-6.

King’s Way, which draws players from around Southwest Washington, competes in the top division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association. It opens its 2011 schedule with a non-league match at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Columbia River High School against Central Catholic of Portland.

Top scorers for King’s Way at the weekend jamboree were Jack Beall (13 goals, two assists, 10 ground balls fielded), Tyler Preston (four goals, 12 ground balls fielded), Koda Robinson (four goals, three ground balls), and Clayton Frank (three goals, eight assists, 12 ground balls).

Women’s bowling tourney starts

The 30th edition of the Clark County Women’s Bowling Championship tournament began its three-weekend run over the weekend at Allen’s Crosley Lanes.

Only one team bowled on the opening weekend. The Roller Chicks recorded a score of 2,556, including their 753 handicap. Team members are Arlene Sedell, Donna Trivette, Diana Nelson and Carole Hess. They entered the division for teams with an average game of 620 or below.

The tournament continues with squads scheduled on March 20, March 26 amd March 27. Any woman who is a member of the United States Bowling Congress is eligible to enter. For details, call 360-694-6348 or 360-693-4789.

Youth rugby season starts

The 2011 high school rugby season opened over the weekend.

In Division 1 of Oregon Youth Rugby, the Vancouver Sharks tied West Linn, 10-10, while Linn-Benton topped Prairie 10-7.

In Division 3, Lincoln/Westside topped Camas 34-14.

In Division 2, the result of the Battle Ground match against Columbia County was not available.

Tennis results listed

Results from the recent Vancouver Tennis Center Grand Slam Series tournament are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

The VTC Australian Open Doubles Tournament was played March 5-6. It is one of eight tournaments hosted each year to mirror the four tennis grand slam tournaments.
