The Portland Japanese Garden has erected a “Wish Arbor” where visitors can pray and reflect on Friday’s earthquake and tsunami and subsequent hardships faced by people in Japan.

Visitors are encouraged to write wishes and condolences for victims of the disasters and tie them to the memorial arbor.

Donations to the Oregon Japan Relief Fund through Mercy Corps and American Red Cross will be sent to Japan along with written wishes tied to the arbor.

The memorial will be open through March 29, during garden hours: noon to 4 p.m. Monday, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

The memorial is immediately outside the admission gate and there is no admission fee to visit the memorial.

The Japanese Garden is at 611 S.W. Kingston Drive, above Washington Park.
