Northwest tennis team places fifth

The United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest men’s team of Charles Hahn, Greg Conn and Sutjay Lee — all of Clark County — placed fifth out of the 16 USTA Section teams at the Tri-Level Championships at Indian Wells, Calif., over the weekend.

Hahn, the team captain and also tennis coach at Fort Vancouver High School, said his team was one point shy of tying for third place. The 4.0-level team was 2-2 in the event.

According to the USTA website, the tri-level format takes into account the three ratings levels (3.5, 4.0, 4.5) of its members. It also uses non-traditional “games won” format over the individual match lines won format.

The championships were held in conjunction with the BNP Paribas Open and played on the same courts and stadiums at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden as the ATP and WTA professionals.

The Northwest team lost its opener to Hawaii in three sets with two tiebreakers. They also lost in three sets to the Northern Section. Victories came against the Intermountain Section in three sets and Missouri Valley Section in two sets.

Southern California won the event with Hawaii placing second.

“It was an incredible experience,” said Hahn, who added that all players were provided excellent seats for the pro tournament.
