JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police say a Palestinian and an Israeli soldier have been hurt in the West Bank in the latest incident amid a recent spike in violence.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says the Palestinian attacked an Israeli soldier with a stone on Friday, inflicting a serious head wound. Police arrived at the scene and shot and wounded the Palestinian.

A bombing on Wednesday killed a British tourist in Jerusalem, and earlier this month five members of an Israeli family were slain while they slept in a West Bank settlement. Both attacks appeared to be the work of Palestinian militants.

Also this week, Israeli shelling killed three children and their uncle in Gaza amid a spike in rocket fire from the Hamas-run Palestinian strip. The army said it was targeting militants.
