ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) — The owners of bison roaming the mountains of northeastern Oregon say they’ll try to round up and sell some of the animals.

Debbie Wolf of Creswell, whose father owns a 20,000-acre ranch near the Eagle Cap Wilderness, tells The Oregonian most of the herd stays on the property — but some break fences and leave.

She says the bison have been on the ranch about 10 years. The herd has grown from about 15 to as many as 50 animals.

The free-ranging bison drew attention when The Oregonian ran a story about them. The paper says the piece generated interest in a hunting season.

But Wallowa County Undersheriff Steve Rogers says that under Oregon law, the buffalo are considered personal property, and killing one would be first-degree theft.
