LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A 17-year-old high school student in Kentucky is in serious but stable condition after being hit in the face by a line drive during a softball game.

Rockcastle County High School junior Holly Ham started breathing on her own Wednesday at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center after undergoing brain surgery late Monday night after the game.

Her parents, Julie and Jeff Ham, are asking that the Kentucky High School Athletic Association make face masks mandatory for all students, especially for pitchers and third base.

Commissioner Julian Tackett said that these types of incidents are what trigger rule changes, but he said the concern with masks is that they obstruct vision and become potential safety hazards.
