CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — David Toms handled a shifting wind at Quail Hollow for a 6-under 66 and a share of the early lead with Jonathan Byrd in the Wells Fargo Championship.

Toms was the first winner of this tournament in 2003. After playing at Quail Hollow all these years, it was strange for him to see the wind out of the opposite direction, not to mention temperatures just over 40 degrees when he teed off.

He had to hit fairway metals into three par 4s and even on a par 3, although Toms managed just fine.

That wasn’t the case for defending champion Rory McIlroy. In his first trip back to America since his Masters collapse, McIlroy struggled with his putting and opened with a 75.

Toms and Byrd had a one-shot lead over Lucas Glover and Pat Perez.
