Letter: Racism is rearing its ugly head

The Columbian
Published: May 5, 2011, 12:00am

I am saddened and sickened by the “birther/university admission/not American” poison about our president that is coming from a segment of our society. I am even more upset that some of our Republican leadership nods to this ugliness.

We all should make it clear that this is unacceptable. Make it clear with your vote and with letters to your representatives. It is dangerous for our country, and it is dangerous for every single child — white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. — who hears this terrible stuff.

I had believed that ugly racism was gradually subsiding in our country. It is painful to know this is not true.

Barack Obama — whether or not you agree with his political positions — had a mother and grandparents who inspired him and expected the best of him. He did his best in response: He graduated magna cum laude at Harvard University, then became a senator and our president. Who would not be proud of such a person? Who among us should not be proud that this is possible in our country?

Every one of us should turn away in disgust at anyone who declares our president is not an American because we all know full well that such a declaration is about his color, and such a declaration is anti-American at its core.
