BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Mark Calcavecchia has surged to a three-shot lead in the Regions Tradition with a 7-under 65 in the second round at Shoal Creek.
Calcavecchia opened Friday’s round in a four-man group one shot off the lead, but birdied holes 10-12 to move into strong position to contend for his first Champions Tour win at the year’s opening major. He’s at 11 under par entering the final two rounds.
The 13-time PGA Tour winner hasn’t made a bogey since opening the tournament with a double on the first hole. He made a 25-foot putt on No. 12 and missed a birdie on the final hole by a few inches.
No 36-hole Traditions leader has won since Tom Watson in 2003.
Kenny Perry matched the 13-time PGA Tour winner’s 65 on Day 2, but remains three strokes back.
