AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say an Auburn police officer shot and killed a 47-year-old man who pulled a knife during a traffic stop.

Police say that after the officer stopped a red Honda around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the driver got out and confronted the officer with the weapon. The officer responded by shooting the suspect.

Medics arrived quickly and the wounded man was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he died a short while later.

Police say a female passenger was uninjured and investigators hope she can help explain why the man brandished the knife.

Details were still being collected and the area around the intersection was closed to traffic early Sunday morning.

No names were immediately released.

The Kent Police Department is investigating, which is a routine response for critical incidents.
