A Camas man has improved from serious to fair condition in a Boise, Idaho, hospital following a single-vehicle wreck Monday that killed his wife.

Daniel Maxwell, 62, was partially ejected from the 1999 Jeep Cherokee that lurched out of control on Interstate 84, four miles west of Ontario, Ore. His wife, Cathy Maxwell, was thrown from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Oregon State Police.

The Maxwells weren’t wearing seat belts, troopers said.

Paramedics with a Life Flight helicopter flew Daniel Maxwell to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. His injuries weren’t believed life-threatening, but he was listed in serious condition Monday morning.

On Wednesday evening, a nursing supervisor said he’s improved to fair condition.

The bulletin said Cathy Maxwell was driving east when the SUV drifted left and off the edge of the freeway.

She steered back to the right but lost control. The SUV then hit a guardrail and rolled over it, with parts of the SUV being torn off. The SUV rolled into the median divider and stopped there on its three remaining wheels, the bulletin said.
