The Hockinson boys soccer team made the most of its first trip to the Class 2A state tournament.

Cotter Hamilton scored 10 minutes into the second half, then added an insurance goal with about eight minutes remaining, and Hawks recorded another playoff shutout, beating Evergreen of Seattle 2-0 in the first round.

Hockinson will travel to face the winner of the Archbishop Murphy vs. North Kitsap. The second-round match will be Saturday, site and time to be announced. Hockinson went 3-1 in the district tournament to advance to state — all three victories via shutout.

Shamele Battan had seven saves against Evergreen.

“(Evergreen) had a couple of set plays that were very close. Shamele made a couple of real good saves on corner kicks to keep us even before we got our first goal,” Hockinson coach Vic Oenning said. “He’s such a great goalkeeper, but he’s also the quarterback of our defense. He’s the guy keeping us organized.”

The coach also credited his players for their discipline on defense against a fast, athletic opponent.

Both goals came off the transition game.

Jarren Parthemer got the assist on the first goal, then a long pass from Langdon Roscoe found Hamilton for the second goal, with Hamilton splitting the defense to get off the shot.

“Guys are excited,” Oenning said. “They were really pumped. They’re more excited that we’re moving on and we have the opportunity to keep the season alive.”
