JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) — Rain and melting snow over the weekend have combined to flood some areas of Eastern Oregon.

Volunteers were trying to keep high water out of homes, businesses and schools in several counties after some rivers pushed over their banks.

The Oregonian reported that Grant Union High School between Canyon City and John Day was closed when water from Canyon Creek swept into the gym and flooded an adjoining athletic field.

Grant County Commissioner Boyd Briton called it the worst flooding in the area in at least 35 years.

In Union County, the Grande Ronde River crested between La Grande and the town of Perry on Monday afternoon, coming within half-foot of establishing a new high-water record.
