Two men believed to be involved in a suspected gang shooting Tuesday night in central Vancouver made their first appearances Wednesday morning in Clark County Superior Court.

Attorneys said in court that investigators are still piecing together the confrontation that sent one man to the hospital.

Zackery A. Flores, 16, of Vancouver is being held at the Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder and Erick D. Butler, 20, of Vancouver is jailed on suspicion of first-degree assault.

Judge Barbara Johnson set bail at $200,000 for Flores and $100,000 for Butler.

She set arraignment for both defendants for June 1.

Police responded around 7:15 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the 3700 block of East 18th St. Callers to 911 reported hearing several gun shots, police said.

The shooting was the result of a gang confrontation in which two men — identified in court documents as Flores and Butler — displayed handguns. Flores allegedly fired several shots toward Butler after he said Butler pointed a gun at him, according to court documents.

None of the shots hit Butler. According to court documents, Butler then chased Flores with a gun in hand. He later told investigators that “if he had the chance, he would have killed the shooter,” according to court documents.

A third unidentified man in his early 40s was struck by one of the shots and was transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center with injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening, police said. He was subsequently released.

Police found several spent shell casings in the area of the shooting, according to court documents.

The investigation is continuing.
