KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials say gunmen wearing suicide vests have stormed a government building in eastern Afghanistan and are in a shootout with Afghan security forces.

The army commander for Khost province says at least one guard has been killed in the fighting at the traffic department compound on the edge of Khost city. Gen. Raz Mohammad Oryakhail says between three and four men shot their way into the compound early Sunday. He says they are inside the building and shooting at police and soldiers.

Provincial Police Chief Gen. Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai says the Afghan forces have surrounded the traffic department building. He says they are not launching a full assault because the militants are wearing suicide vests and they don’t want them to detonate their explosives.
