Letter: Special session is inexcusable

As a taxpayer and student, I support tax dollars going to public education. Every year our elected officials in Olympia establish a budget, which includes funding for schools, by a specific date. For some unexplained reason, the Senate and the House have not been able to come together this year to establish a budget.

The deadline date was not a secret, yet the state legislators have not met this deadline. This is inexcusable and I don’t know of any other occupation that would tolerate individuals not meeting their deadline and not be fired. It is bad enough that millions of dollars are being slashed from education, which will result in larger classrooms and a huge jump in tuition, but this lack of responsibility to their constituents is costly.

Every day that the Legislature is in special session costs the taxpayers anywhere from $8,000 to $14,000.

The Legislature needs to get their act together and do their job. Quit taking money away from education and spending money that the state doesn’t have for special sessions. Step up and do your job on time and on budget. At the very least, take your overtime pay that you earned for not doing your job and put it back into education.
