PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a man found fatally shot in the Eastern Oregon town of Irrigon shortly after he called police to say two people were stealing gas from his property actually committed suicide.

Morrow County Sheriff Ken Matlack tells the East Oregonian that 38-year-old Wade Bonner staged the 911 call about a gas theft that prompted a deputy to respond and find his body Tuesday morning.

The sheriff says Bonner was facing financial problems.

KNDU reports the Oregon state medical examiner found that Bonner died from a gunshot wound to the head. The medical examiner agrees the injury was self-inflicted.
