OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — High Rate of Return outran favorite Mighty B Valiant in a side-by-side race to the wire to win the Heritage Place Futurity, the nation’s first million-dollar quarter horse race of the year.
Starting the farthest from the rail out of the No. 10 post, High Rate of Return dueled with the 3-5 favorite before pulling ahead at the end of the 350 yards to win by half a length in 17.426 seconds.
It was the second straight win in the Heritage Place Futurity — Remington Park’s premier quarter horse race — for trainer Edward Hardy. He won last year’s million-dollar race with longshot Givinitaroyaleffort in a multi-horse photo finish.
Dm Strait Up and Ranch Candy finished in a dead heat for third on Saturday night.
