Big cuts shock northwest Ore. community college

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — A decision to lay off more than a third of the full-time faculty members at Clatsop Community College in northwest Oregon has shocked the Astoria campus.

The school’s administration said last week that 15 of the 39 full-time teachers will be laid off, effective with the spring term, as part of the effort to close a $1 million budget gap.

The Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/rRrbIK ) the size of the cuts were a surprise after the school had managed to cut staff in recent years but keep faculty ranks largely intact.

School officials say they’re trying to find some partners to help mitigate the cuts, hospitals to help with the nursing program, for example.
