DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — (AP) — The Grand-Am Rolex Series has created a three-race North American Endurance Championship for the 2012 season.

Point structure and purse for the championship have not been announced. But the championship rounds will be at the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, Watkins Glen, and the three-hour inaugural race at Indianapolis.

The championship series was announced Wednesday as part of Grand-Am’s 13-race schedule. The series will also make an inaugural stop in Detroit and return to Montreal at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The endurance championship will be for teams in both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes. Awards for the championship will be presented at dusk on the Victory Podium at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
