JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says soldiers manning a West Bank checkpoint have mistakenly shot and killed an Israeli settler.

The military says soldiers near the Palestinian city of Hebron set up a checkpoint early Friday to intercept a car which they deemed suspicious. It did not slow down when approaching and they opened fire, fearing a Palestinian attack.

The military said one man was killed and two passengers were seriously wounded. Israeli media identified the man killed as a resident of a nearby Israeli settlement.

The military said the incident is under investigation.

Israel’s military has overall security control in the West Bank, where some 300,000 Israeli settlers live alongside 2.5 million Palestinians.
