Letter: Biomass project threatens air quality

The Columbian
Published: November 10, 2011, 4:00pm

What’s the big deal about biomass? Looking at the projected emissions, one is tempted to say, “It’s not that bad.” On further review of the technical analysis for the proposed biomass burner, I’m shocked by the projected increases over existing pollution levels.

I’m also shocked that the numbers haven’t been publicized, but frankly, I’m not very surprised. It seems that the crux of the plan rests on the hope that a confused and underinformed citizenry will blindly go along with a plan that will have negative impacts on the quality of life in Vancouver.

The lack of transparency from the contractor Schneider Electric is appalling. The biomass plant proposal is surely a big deal — Schneider Electric is poised to make millions selling out the future health and vitality of Vancouver.

What can we do? Demand the numbers. Demand information. Demand that our Clark County commissioners respect their constituents and listen to the health and air quality concerns of voters.

Our air quality is in peril — any addition to the existing pollution is a smear for our city. Consider projected numbers, and you tell me, is biomass really “not that bad?”
