Albany (NY) eases past Monmouth (NJ) 41-24

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — Running back Drew Smith ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, helping Albany (N.Y.) remain in a tie for first place in the Northeast Conference with a 41-24 win over Monmouth (N.J.) Saturday.

Smith rushed for 131 yards on 14 carries and threw a 44-yard touchdown to Justinian Mason on his only pass attempt for the Great Danes (7-3, 6-1), who are knotted atop the league standings with Duquesne.

Dan Di Lella completed 16 of 26 passes with 306 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Albany, which outgained Monmouth 539-385 on offense.

The game was tied at 17-17 midway through the third quarter, but Smith broke a 62-yard run for a score with 1:36 left until the fourth to give Albany the lead for good. Albany scored 24 straight points from that juncture.

Craig Peterson had 296 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Monmouth (5-5, 4-3).
