Northern Iowa beats Illinois State 23-20 in 2 OT

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Tyler Sievertsen kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to tie the game, then won it in the second overtime with a 36-yarder as Northern Iowa beat Illinois State 23-20 on Saturday.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime. Tirrell Rennie, who finished with 100 yards rushing, ran 12 yards for a score for Northern Iowa (9-2, 7-1 Missouri Valley), but the Redbirds (7-4, 6-2) tied it when Matt Brown threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Marvon Sanders on fourth down. In the second overtime, Illinois State had the ball first, but Nick Aussieker’s 37-yard field goal missed wide left. Sievertsen made his third field goal of the game to win it.

Cliffton Gordon’s 1-yard run with 2:57 remaining had put Illinois State in front 13-10. The Panthers then drove 38 yards after Carlos Anderson’s 39-yard kickoff return to set up Sievertsen’s tying field goal.
