US: No change to missile shield amid Russia threat

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says the U.S. will not limit or change its missile defense plans in Europe amid new threats from Russia.
Spokesman Tommy Vietor says the U.S. has been open and transparent with Moscow on its missile defense plans in Western Europe. The U.S. has repeatedly said those plans reflect a growing threat from Iran and wouldn't be directed against Russia's nuclear forces.
Vietor says the implementation of the U.S. missile shield is going well and the U.S. sees no basis for threats to withdraw from it.
His comments follow Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's assertion Wednesday that Russia would target the U.S. missile shield in Europe if Washington fails to assuage Moscow's concerns about its plans. Russia wants binding guarantees that the shield will not be aimed against Russia.
