DALLAS (AP) — Cannen Cunningham hit two key free throws down the stretch and scored a career-high 18 points to help SMU defeat Georgia Southern 55-49 on Sunday.
Cunningham’s free throws came with 30 seconds left to build the lead to 53-49 and Robert Nyakundi hit two more free throws with 15 seconds left for the Mustangs (4-3). Nyakundi’s second free throw gave him 1,000 career points. He finished with 11 points.
London Giles scored 14 for SMU, and Jalen Jones grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, helping the Mustangs to a 36-25 advantage on the glass.
Georgia Southern (1-4) scored 22 points off turnovers, but SMU made up for miscues with 24 points off the bench.
Eric Ferguson and Jelani Hewitt each scored 14 points for Georgia Southern.
