SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Health officials say southeast Sandy has the state’s highest rate of melanoma, breast and colorectal cancer cases.
The Utah Department of Health also has identified more than two dozen other locations that have higher-than-average rates as part of its Utah Cancer Small Area Report released Tuesday.
The report shows southeast Sandy had 179.1 breast cancer cases per 100,000 women followed by South Jordan with a rate of 154.5. The national average is 124.3 per 100,000 women.
State epidemiologists say Utah has the second-highest melanoma rate in the country at 28.1 per 100,000 people. Oregon had the country’s highest melanoma rate with 28.8 per 100,000.
Utah epidemiologist Robert Rolfs says the rate of Utah residents getting cancer screenings is also lower than the national average, likely leading to the increased cases.
