FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana high school basketball star who suffered a serious head injury in a small plane crash that killed his father and stepmother probably won’t return to the court this season.

Austin Hatch’s family made the announcement Wednesday in a statement distributed Fort Wayne’s Canterbury High School.

Hatch committed in June to play basketball at the University of Michigan starting in 2013. The fatal plane crash happened soon after as the family was heading to a summer home in Michigan.

Hatch’s family says he’s making great strides in his rehabilitation, but the first year is vital to the recovery process and it’s unlikely his doctors will clear him to play during his junior season.

The family says Hatch attend Canterbury’s games, but asks the news media to respect his privacy.
