LONDON (AP) — Mark Cavendish, the world road race champion, has joined Britain’s Team Sky for the 2012 cycling season.

The 26-year-old Briton is widely regarded as the best sprinter in cycling after winning five stages at this year’s Tour de France to capture the green jersey, given to the race’s overall leading points scorer.

Cavendish followed that up by becoming world champion in Copenhagen last month.

Dave Brailsford, Team Sky principal, says in a statement “Mark is the greatest sprinter of his generation and is well on his way to becoming the greatest of all time. He is a rider of exceptional talent.”

Cavendish, who previously rode for HTC-Highroad, joins fellow Briton Bradley Wiggins at the Manchester-based team.
