MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — Middle Tennessee offensive coordinator Willie Simmons has stepped down for personal reasons.

Athletic director Chris Massaro announced the resignation Friday night. The Blue Raiders (1-4, 0-2 Sun Belt Conference) lost 36-33 in double overtime to Western Kentucky a week ago. They are off this week and are at Florida Atlantic on Oct. 22.

Simmons, who also served as Middle Tennessee’s running backs coach, says he needs to focus on personal matters that he did not disclose.

Coach Rick Stockstill thanked Simmons for working with him and with the Blue Raiders the past five years. Stockstill says Simmons is like a son to him and that he will support him through this difficult time.
