ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — The Coast Guard in Oregon has detained a 734-foot Egyptian cargo vessel for failure to comply with safety, security and environmental protection regulations.

The Edfu lost significant propulsion power last week while preparing to cross the Columbia River Bar. The crew anchored in place until tugs could arrive. The Coast Guard worked with response tugs and bar pilots to bring the ship safely to port in Astoria.

There, Coast Guard inspectors found numerous deficiencies, including cracked piping that prevented the crew from being able to respond to a fire aboard the ship. The vessel also failed a critical security inspection.

The Coast Guard says the ship has since complied with all security measures and made “substantial progress” toward repairing the firefighting piping system.
