Letter: Increase precautions to protect pets

In response to the recent reports regarding the bulldog that was held for ransom, I feel badly for the owner of this dog. However, I am disgusted by the lengths these individuals who may have kidnapped the dog went through to get money and prescription medication. Dog napping is on the rise, and I urge owners to take necessary precautions to avoid such a horrible endeavor.

As a dog lover and 4-H member of 11 years, I urge owners to please not leave your dog in your car. This is dangerous not only because someone could take your dog, but cars can easily get very warm and can cause dogs to die. In addition, please have a fenced yard for your dog or walk them on leashes. And if you do have a fenced yard and leave your dog outside during the day, please put the dog in the backyard so they cannot easily be seen from the street.

If necessary precautions are taken, people can avoid having to go through a similar event with their own dog and we can put a stop to individuals making a profit off of our beloved pets.
