GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger has made a precautionary trip to the hospital en route to his team’s game at Florida after he experienced severe discomfort in his surgically repaired hip.

Schnellenberger, who was traveling on one of his team’s four buses Friday, left the caravan near Port St. Lucie and was taken to a hospital by ambulance for X-rays, school officials said.

When tests determined Schnellenberger was fine, he was released by the hospital and rode with his family by car to Gainesville. He’s expected to be on the sideline as usual for the Owls’ opener Saturday against the 22nd-ranked Gators.

The 77-year-old Schnellenberger announced last month he’ll retire from coaching following this season.
