Talking Points: Mark Teixeira gets it

The Columbian
Published: September 6, 2011, 12:00am

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Mark Teixeira of the Yankees understands if you will want to stop watching the Yankees play. Especially when they play the Red Sox.

Nine-inning games with relative normal scoring should not take four hours to play.

But when the Yankees and Red Sox play, that is pretty much what happens. Even Teixeira is bored.

“It’s brutal. I can’t stand playing a nine-inning game in four hours. It’s not baseball. I don’t even know how to describe it. If I was a fan, why would I want to come watch people sitting around and talking back and forth, going to the mound, 2-0 sliders in the dirt? Four-hour games can’t be fun for a fan, either.”

Monday, while catching the end of the Red Sox game against Toronto, the announcers noted that Jonathon Papelbon took more than a minute between pitches.

Boring.

Anyway, Teixeira gets it.

Unfortunately, nothing will be done by baseball to speed up these games. If the Yankees and Red Sox are involved, baseball wants them on TV as long as possible.

Have you seen the Old Navy commercials that show family and friends gathering to watch Alabama play football? In it, there are dozens dressed in red, but then one guy shows up wearing Auburn colors.

That’s OK, though, because the guy wearing Auburn is just delivering the pizza. Naturally.

Apparently, this has not gone over well with the folks at Auburn.

We think it’s hilarious. We also think it was intentional. The CEO of Old Navy reportedly is an Alabama grad. That’s truly funny, to use your international clothing company to make fun of a rival.

Our first “sign of the year” entry from the fans who sport signs behind the gang at ESPN’s College GameDay:

“My other sign left the Big 12.”

Well played, sir.
