MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A juvenile court judge in Memphis has ruled that a 16-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing the principal of a Christian school whose throat was slashed should be tried as an adult.
Special Judge Herbert Lane decided Wednesday that Eduardo Marmolejo should be transferred to adult court and held without bond. A grand jury will determine whether to indict Marmolejo.
The teen is accused in the Aug. 10 death of Suzette York in a classroom at Memphis Junior Academy. In his opening statement, state prosecutor Reggie Henderson said Marmolejo stabbed York nine times on the third day of classes. He added that the first cut was to the principal’s windpipe, preventing her from screaming.
Earlier Wednesday, psychologists for both sides gave conflicting testimony about the teen’s competency.
