EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A former inmate has pleaded guilty to conspiring to threaten a prospective witness against a man who’s been jailed in Eugene since 2009 on charges of identity theft and fraud in a scheme to fake his own death.

The Eugene Register-Guard (http://bit.ly/p5qxeQ ) says the plea from Robert Joseph Landreth is the latest turn in a case involving Randy Arlen Mainwaring, once manager of a local bank office.

The FBI says Landreth and Mainwaring were in the same jail dormitory in October 2010.

Landreth said in court that on Mainwaring’s behalf, he left a threatening voice message for the prospective witness that month. The FBI says it came hours after Landreth was released.

Landreth’s sentencing is in November. Both the defense and prosecution say there is a plea deal.
