JERUSALEM (AP) — Dozens of Palestinians have held a rally in the West Bank to show their support for a unilateral statehood bid that their leaders plan to make at the U.N. later this month.

Friday’s rally in the village of Bilin was the first of a series that Palestinians are planning ahead of their quest for U.N. endorsement of a Palestinian state when the General Assembly convenes in late September. About 50 demonstrators turned out and chanted slogans in favor of U.N. recognition.

Israel and the U.S. strongly oppose the plan, saying Palestinian statehood should only be achieved through negotiations.
