A late-night fire on Monday damaged a garage at a home in the 6700 block of Northeast 78th Street, east of Hazel Dell.

No one was injured in the blaze.

The call started as a single-engine response to smoke in the area, Capt. Kevin Murray with Vancouver Fire Department said.

Firefighters in the engine could smell something burning and eventually found a column of smoke in the area. They had trouble finding the exact location because the home is located off a 300-foot driveway, Murray said.

The fire was “going pretty good” in a garage that was attached to the home by a breezeway, Murray said.

Firefighters used a water tender to douse the flames instead of laying hundreds of feet of hose from the nearest hydrant.

“Sometimes it’s easier to bring a water tender,” Murray said.

Firefighters made forcible entry to the garage and house and found no one there. They were able to put the fire out after several minutes.

The fire caused $18,000 in structural damage and $14,000 in loss of contents, said Clark County Deputy Fire Marshal Susan Anderson.

County property records show the home is owned by Nicolae and Lidia Magda.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
