CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) — The grandson of a woman who developed an anti-racism program in Eugene was beaten, and family members say the attacker used racial slurs.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/p2G216) that the family of 16-year-old Jonah Scott Fernandez posted pictures of his bruised, cut and swollen face on the Internet to draw attention to the attack. The family also testified in front of the city council on Monday.

Fernandez is the grandson of Bahati Ansari, who created the Racism-Free Zone at her middle school in the 1980s after her son objected to art depicting a lynching that was posted on the wall in his classroom. The program was emulated at other schools both in and beyond Oregon.

The Lane County Sheriff’s office is investigating the assault.
