CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Richard Childress Racing has promoted Kent Day to director of competition on an interim basis.

The move was made Tuesday because Scott Miller agreed to join Michael Waltrip Racing. Miller has been director of competition since 2008. He initially worked for RCR from 1997-99, and rejoined the organization as a crew chief in 2003.

Day moves up from his previous position as technical director.

The timing of Miller’s departure is curious because RCR driver Kevin Harvick took over sole possession of first in the points standings. Harvick finished second in Monday’s opening round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship at Chicagoland Speedway.
