SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The state Department of Social and Health Services has revoked the license of a Spokane Valley adult family home because the caregiver carries a pistol and keeps a shotgun locked up in his room.

The state agency told KREM (http://bit.ly/n1ul53 ) the issue is not gun rights, but the safety of six elderly residents.

Police escorted DSHS investigators on an Aug. 29 inspection of the Valley Pines Retirement Home.

Home operator Spencer Lowell says he has the proper permits to carry a pistol and has violated no laws. He says he locks the pistol up at night with the shotgun.

The license revocation is being appealed through administrative hearings.
