Talks continue in Tacoma teachers’ strike

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Negotiations in the Tacoma teachers’ strike resumed Tuesday afternoon with a state mediator, after going to 2:15 in the morning.

Washington Education Association spokesman Rich Wood says the big issue is the district’s policy on teacher transfers. The district wants to consider other factors in addition to seniority in moving some teachers.

Wood says teachers on the picket line have received support from students and parents.

District spokesman Dan Voelpel says the district is deciding each afternoon whether to cancel classes the next day. Wood says teachers would have to vote on a tentative agreement before heading back to class.

Wednesday would be the seventh day without school in Tacoma, Washington’s third-largest district with 28,000 students and 1,900 teachers.

Teachers are striking in violation of a court order.
