EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora feels he is close to returning to the New York Giants’ lineup but is uncertain whether he will be able to play this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1).

Speaking in the locker room for the first time since last season, the 29-year-old Umenyiora said Thursday that his surgically repaired knee may never again be 100 percent.

However, it has improved since his arthroscopic surgery in August and he wants to get back on the field as soon as possible to help the Giants (1-1) win games.

Umenyiora has no regrets about his decision to fight for a new contract, adding at some point a player has to go for it. He believes he has some good seasons and hopes the Giants will reward him at some point with a new contract.
