Late FG lifts S. Illinois past Missouri St. 20-18

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Jackson MacLachlan hit a 27-yard field goal with 50 seconds remaining Saturday to give Southern Illinois a 20-18 victory over Missouri State in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The Salukis (2-1) got the ball on their own 28 with 4:51 left and drove 62 yards in 11 plays to set up MacLachlan’s game-winner.

Missouri State (0-4) had taken an 18-17 lead on a 1-yard run by Chris Douglas with 6 seconds left in the third quarter, before failing on the two-point conversion.

Jerome Hampton had 119 yards rushing for the Salukis, while Paul McIntosh was 13 of 24 passing for 206 yards and added 60 yards rushing and a pair of TDs. Cam Fuller had six catches for 120 yards.

Trevor Wooden was 9 for 19 for 167 yards, two TDs and three interceptions for Missouri State, while Jermaine Saffold caught five passes for 122 yards and a score.
