AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Mike Dyer could be poised to take more of a Marcus Lattimore-like role in Auburn’s offense.
The tailback has been the Tigers’ biggest offensive threat and posted two 150-yard rushing games in their first four contests. But Auburn hasn’t put the game in his hands for 20-plus carries like No. 10 South Carolina routinely does with Lattimore.
Auburn coach Gene Chizik says Dyer “is ready to assume that role” going into Saturday’s game at South Carolina.
Dyer says he’s prepared to carry it as many times as the coaches want him to. Lattimore is leading the nation with 26.75 carries a game and is easily the league’s top rusher.
Dyer still hasn’t topped 20 carries in a game this season but is the SEC’s No. 3 runner.
